FAQs
-
What are salsa improver classes?
Our salsa improver classes are the natural next step for anyone who has completed Level 1 Beginners. At this stage, we move beyond the basic steps to focus on the fluidity of your dance. You’ll be exposed to a larger variety of moves and combinations while working deeply on your leading, following, rhythm, and balance.
-
What do I need to know before joining the Salsa Improver course?
Before progressing to our salsa improver classes, you should be fully comfortable with the Level 1 Beginners syllabus. Specifically, you should have a solid grasp of:
Rhythm & Timing: Consistently finding the "1" and staying on beat throughout a full song.
The Basics: Confidence in your basic steps, side steps, and back-breaks.
Right Turns: Ability to lead or follow a standard right turn using either the left or right hand.
Cross Body Lead (CBL): The foundational linear movement of Cross Body Salsa.
Inside & Outside Turns: Executing both inside and outside turn variations of the Cross Body Lead.
Hammerlock: Mastering the "behind-the-back" hand positioning and lead/follow.
Open Break: Creating the "spring" effect and tension required for more dynamic moves.
If you are unsure whether you have mastered these techniques, we recommend staying in Level 1 for one more term or speaking with your instructor for a quick assessment.
-
How is the Improver level structured?
Our salsa improver classes are split into several progressive programs that run throughout the year. Each course introduces different concepts, variations and turn patterns, ensuring you are constantly challenged, while continuing to practice and strengthen your fundamentals.
-
How long should I stay in the Improver level?
Salsa is a language, and the Improver level is where you learn to have a conversation! We generally expect students to complete four to six Level 2 courses before progressing to Level 3 Intermediate Salsa. This allows you to build the "muscle memory" and confidence needed to handle the faster pace and more complex styling of the higher levels. Everyone is different and it might take a longer or shorter time to progress; our aim is for you to enjoy the journey at the pace that is needed for YOU.
-
What technical skills will I work on in these classes?
In our salsa improver classes, we move from "what" to "how." You will focus on:
Lead/Follow Precision: Communicating moves clearly and responsively without looking at your feet.
Timing & Musicality: Staying perfectly on the "1" even during complex turns.
Spinning Technique: Learning how to execute clean, balanced turns without losing your place on the floor.
Introduction to Styling and Body movement: Starting to look like a salsa dancer rather than someone who just does steps.
-
Do I need to bring a partner to Improver classes?
No partner is required! We continue our social rotation system in all our salsa improver classes. Dancing with different people is actually one of the fastest ways to improve your leading and following skills, as it teaches you to adapt to different styles and "frames."
-
What should I wear at this level?
As the complexity of your turns increases, your footwear becomes more important. For salsa improver classes, we highly recommend investing in proper dance shoes with smooth soles. This protects your knees during spins and gives you better control. Feel free to get in touch for recommended shoe styles. Clean, comfortable, breathable clothing is still a must!
-
Who are the instructors?
You will be learning from our senior instructors who have taught people like yourself for years. They bring an incredible level of detail to the salsa improver classes, helping you fix those "beginner habits" and giving you the styling tips that make you look like a pro on the social dance floor.
-
Can I book a trial for an Improver class?
Yes! If you have danced elsewhere and aren't sure if you’re ready for Level 2, you can book a trial for our salsa improver classes. It’s the best way to see the level of the class and meet the community before committing to a full course.
-
What is your cancellation policy?
Course fees are non-refundable. Because we run progressive courses with limited spaces, your booking secures your spot for the entire duration of the term. For more details on our policies, please see our full Terms & Conditions here.
